“B4.DA.$$” beats “Tetsuo & Youth” in Sales

Albums B4.DA.$$ by Joey Bada$$ and Tetsuo & Youth by Lupe Fiasco were both released last Tuesday, January 20th holding great anticipation from their fans. But the first-week sales just came in, and it’s clear which artist actually had more anticipation behind their project. Joey Bada$$ outsold Lupe Fiasco, an established emcee who has received several gold and platinum plaques so far in his career. Tetsuo & Youth was Lupe’s fifth studio release, tallying up to 36,000 copies, while the 20-year-old Brooklyn-based rapper sold nearly 58,000. This landed Joey a spot on the top 5 of the Billboard 200.

This situation is quite interesting given a few factors. We are now in an era where illegal downloads aren’t strangers, especially to the youth, but Joey’s strong fan base followed through–making an amazing 94% of his sales comprised in traditional album buys. Joey is also an independent artist who did not have a radio-centric single to promote the album. Further, Lupe has built up a lot of anticipation for Tetsuo & Youth due to random projects/singles he put out in the last couple years; also given that Lupe has been receiving a lot of publicity recently for a string of Twitter feuds against Kid Cudi and defending Iggly Azaelea.

In spite of all this, Pro Era’s loyal fans came out in stronger numbers than Fiasco fanatics, moving more units than French Montana, Wale, Iggy Azalea, Travis Porter, and many more.

I conjured up a stream for both albums here. Now you have no reason to not tell us if you dig B4.DA.$$ or Tetsuo & Youth more. What do you think?
