Bryson Tiller season is in full swing. Today (June 5), Billboard reports the Louisville, Ky. singer’s latest album, titled True to Self, has landed at No. 1 on their Billboard 200 albums chart. The Trapsoul, follow-up moved 107,000 album equivalent units in its first week of release.

True to Self was originally slated for a June 23 release, but the talented crooner ultimately decided to drop it a month early. His reasoning? His Tiller-starved friends.

“I’ve been ready to get the music to the fans as soon as possible, so why not?” Tiller told the folks at Billboard. It turns out, dropping the project early wasn’t even his idea. “I can’t take the credit for that. It was just my manager; it was his plan [to] drop it a month early,” he added.

Apparently, the plan for an early release had already been set into motion a good while back. Tiller actually forgot about it himself. “We planned it for a while. I actually forgot it was coming out early. Then they told me [last] week like, ‘Yo! You know it comes out this Friday?’” he explained. Clearly, fans are happy to get their cyber hands on the project.

True to Self is a hip-hop-drenched R&B album that typifies the sorts of sounds that have dominated the radio ever since Drake dropped Take Care a little less than six years ago. Tiller’s smooth vocals mesh perfectly with the instrumentals he chooses to sing on, and he’s definitely got the swag of an accomplished rapper. So there’s no surprise he’s on top this week.
