Following a long battle with lung cancer, Black Sabbath’s Keyboardist Geoff Nicholls, has passed away at the age of 68. Nicholls had performed with Black Sabbath for about 25 years before his passing. According to Nicholls previous band, Quartz (whom he had performed with prior to 1979,) Geoff had been unwell for a long time battling lung cancer.
Nicholls had been undergoing extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments over the past few years. Quartz spoke out to Rolling Stone earlier today to express their condolences, “In this darkest and lowest moment of time Geoff’s lyrics and music speak volumes to us and for us and through these his memory will live on forever.”
Nicholls performed with Quarz for five years before joining Black Sabbath in 1979. Nicholls, along with vocalist Ronnie James Dio, replaced Ozzy Osbourne who had been fired from the band. Nicholls however would have to wait until 1985 before he would be considered an “official member” of Black Sabbath.
Nicholls held this title until Ozzy Osbourne rejoined the band in 1996. Soon after the return of Ozzy, Nicholls would be replaced by Ozzies touring keyboardist Adam Wakeman. “Very sad to hear od old friend and Sabbath keyboard player Geoff Nicholls passing. RIP Geoff,” Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler wrote Saturday.
