The Study: Cannabis and Its Effects on Running

The study involved 42 runners who used cannabis while running. The findings are intriguing: while cannabis, both THC and CBD, enhanced the runners’ mood and enjoyment, THC made the exercise feel more effortful due to an increased heart rate. Surprisingly, the mood enhancement was even greater in the CBD group, suggesting that athletes might enjoy some benefits without the impairment associated with THC.

Enjoyment vs. Performance: A Delicate Balance

The study highlights a critical distinction between enjoyment and performance in exercise. While cannabis can make workouts more enjoyable, it’s not a performance-enhancing drug. In fact, runners under the influence of cannabis ran 31 seconds per mile slower. This suggests that while cannabis might be great for increasing enjoyment, it’s not ideal for those aiming for peak performance.
